Audi RS2
Based on the Audi 80 Avant, the Audi RS2 was born from a collaboration between Audi and Porsche. The car was produced from 1994 through 1996 and was Audi’s first “RS model.” The RS2 was only available as an estate car and only 2891 were produced.
Almost all models were sold within Europe except for a few cars exported to South Africa.
In 1990, Audi had already launched a sports model based on the Audi Coupe (which in turn shared its base with the 80). This model was assigned the name Audi S2 and had a 2.2-liter 20-valve five-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 220 horsepower.
Audi still had some Audi 80 Avants in stock in 1993 of which too many had been produced. The 80 Avant did not sell as well as Audi had hoped. During the same period, Porsche’s sales of the Porsche 911 were also going poorly, so much so that this threatened Porsche with bankruptcy if nothing changed in the short term. This gave Audi the idea to commission Porsche to make the very fastest station wagon but one that remained comfortable enough for daily use.
The basis for the Audi RS2 was the Audi S2 Avant with the same engine and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system. The S2 Avants left the Audi plant in Salzgitter without bumpers, seats and mirrors and were thus taken to the Porsche plant in Stuttgart.
The RS2 has a maximum power output of 316 hp and 410 Nm of torque. The 2.2-liter DOHC five-cylinder inline engine was taken in hand by Porsche and fitted with a KKK turbocharger and connected to a larger intercooler.
The RS2 was lowered about 3 cm compared to the regular 80 Avant. As standard, the car already had the quattro all-wheel drive system with ABS. The 17-inch rims and Brembo brakes are from the Porsche 964/993 as well as the mirrors. Furthermore, there are several RS2 badges on the bodywork such as in the grille and on trunk lid.
Not surprisingly, after these modifications and the substantial increase in power, the RS2 was capable of top performance. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is done in 5.4 seconds and 200 km/h is reached after 22.7 seconds. Top speed is tuned to 262 km/h. Thanks to its all-wheel drive, the car has optimal grip during acceleration, allowing it to briefly beat even a McLaren F1 from standstill. Even modern performance cars are often unable to match these values due to their higher weight.
We are proud to introduce this RS2 to you. The car was delivered on Oct. 27, 1994 in Italy to its first owner who kept the car until 2019! In 2019, he sold the car to the second Italian owner who then quickly sold the car to Belgium, where the car was never registered.
The car comes with its original service booklet and has always been neatly maintained at official Audi and Porsche dealers.
With its 129,000km on the odometer, car is rather a low mileage specimen as most RS2s have over 200,000km on the odometer.
The car runs great and is beautifully original.
Because the RS2 was produced in a limited edition and is considered the “UR” AUDI RS, a good and original example is hard to find. This RS2 will become an oldtimer this year! Don’t wait until they become unaffordable!
