Corvette Pace Car
The Chevrolet Corvette C3 is the third generation of the iconic Corvette and was produced from 1967 to 1982. Although engines and chassis components were largely carried over from the previous generation, bodywork and interior received a completely new design. The result was one of the most recognizable American sports cars ever built. In 1978, Chevrolet celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Corvette, adding an updated fastback rear window with fixed glass to the C3. This intervention gave the now decade-old body a fresh boost, improved aerodynamics, increased luggage space behind the seats and provided better rear visibility.
The Corvette offered here is one of the 1978 limited edition Indy 500 Pace Car’s built in honor of the 62nd edition of the Indianapolis 500. Like the Silver Anniversary version, the Pace Car came as an optional package: RPO Z78. This package included glass T-tops, alloy wheels, power windows, rear window heating, air conditioning, sport mirrors, an adjustable (tilt/telescopic) steering wheel, a heavy duty battery, central door locking and an AM/FM stereo with a choice of an 8-track player or CB radio. In addition, each owner received an official decal set that could be applied as they saw fit, including the famous “winged wheel” Indy Speedway logos on the rear fenders and the large door emblems that read, “Official Pace Car, 62nd Annual Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, May 28, 1978.”
With less than 1,000 miles on the odometer, this C3 is actually in new condition. The car participated in 21 shows, of which it won first place no less than 17 times and was awarded “Best of Show” six times. An exceptional record that underscores the condition and originality of this Corvette. This is not a restored car, but a preserved time capsule.
The Corvette was sold in 1981 to its second owner in the United States, who kept the car until 2021 and preserved it with the same care. The car is still on U.S. title in the name of this second owner. All taxes have been paid. Documentation is exceptionally complete: original purchase invoice, booklets, history, awards and a unique photo book with delivery photos are present. The original decal set is also included.
A (nearly) new one like this is practically unfindable. For the serious collector looking for absolute originality, impressive show history and a Corvette with exceptionally low mileage, this is a unique opportunity.
